in Earnest is a Product Design & Innovation office

Our approach is human-centered and curious. We research, think, experiment, prototype, iterate, test and develop — working closely with our clients to discover opportunities and design better products.

designing better products

We design products that are for real people, designed around the planet they live on, considerate to where they are made and where they end up.

Our small, highly experienced team has been lucky enough to work with everyone from innovative start-ups to well known brands. Our services, together with those of our wide network of UX designers, material specialists and engineers help people and companies to get beyond ideas, from initial sketch to product release.

thinking through making

Our process is idea and material driven. Central to our approach lies our workshop and the design exploration that can only take place through making.

Innovation and discovery rarely happen on screens. The process of prototyping real things, experimenting with real materials, simulating real experiences and occasionally making a real mess is vital to the creation of meaningful outcomes.

who we are

The practice is led by industrial designer Ian Walton. We work on international projects from our west coast studio on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

Ian comes from a family of physicists and is a grandson of professor Ernest Walton, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1951 for splitting the atom. Our studio approach is built on this grounding in problem solving and innovation — believing that meaningful design happens at the intersection of science and creativity.

Ian has over 15 years experience across the design industry from consumer industrial design consultancy and independent design brands to design direction and education. Over the past decade Ian’s work has been exhibited in the Salone del Mobile Milan, WantedDesign New York, DDW Eindhoven, 100% Design London and Liminal Dublin. It has received numerous awards including Time Magazine’s Invention of the Year, iF Product Design, Red Dot, Royal Society of Art London, IDI and Good Design Chicago.
